Remote Visual Inspection

The use of new and emerging technology, in particular Remote Visual Inspection (RVI) is widely used throughout the field of engineering. The inclusion of this technology enables thorough examinations/inspections to be safely undertaken when unsafe, poor or no access can be established. The following procedure will outline the requirements and support the use of remote visual inspection to supplement thorough examinations/inspections.

This guidance, issued by SAFed, can be used to facilitate thorough examinations/inspections within the following legislation:

  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999 (LOLER ((NI))

  • Pressure Safety System Regulations 2000 (PSSR)

  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999 (PUWER)

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR)

  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH).
