Driver Health and Wellbeing

Issued by Global Fleet Champions/Brake, this information sheet highlights that the working environment in the transport and logistics industry has a strong impact on the health and wellbeing of anyone who drives for work. This can affect driver behaviour and the safety of drivers and other road users. It suggests that by looking after their drivers’ health and wellbeing, fleets can demonstrate that they are caring, compassionate employers who put people first and value their safety.

Some of the main health challenges for such drivers include:

  • Stress.

  • Depression.

  • Anxiety.

  • Fatigue.

Driving for work can contribute to poor mental health due to long hours, high demand for continuous alertness, isolation, safety-critical work, and high levels of scrutiny.

The information sheet notes the importance of organisations collectively taking responsibility to manage driver safety through the whole supply chain. It addresses:

  • The relationship between health and wellbeing and driver behaviour.

  • Spotting signs of ill health.

  • Addressing the stigma of mental health in the workplace.

  • Policies for driver health and wellbeing.

  • Driver monitoring systems.

  • Ensuring compliance.
