Cleaning, Hygiene and Handwashing to Reduce Coronavirus (COVID-19) Transmission

This HSE guidance is up to date in line with the lifting of most COVID restrictions in England. It notes that employers must take reasonable steps to protect their workers and others from Coronavirus (COVID-19).

COVID-19 can transfer from people to surfaces and can be passed on to others who touch the same surfaces. Keeping workplaces clean and frequent handwashing reduces the potential for Coronavirus to spread and is a critical part of making and keeping your business working safely.

This guidance aims to help employers organise work and the workplace, so that hygiene is maintained, surfaces are clean, and people are provided with the right facilities to control the risk from (COVID-19).

The document sets out advice on the following:

  • Handwashing and using hand sanitiser.

  • Cleaning the workplace.

  • Bathrooms, toilets and washbasins.

  • Vehicle cleaning.

  • Cleaning - staff arrangements.
